Many people have thought that taking electric guitar lessons is a good thing. It is only when they feel that they are not making progress in their skills and techniques that they begin to wonder if perhaps it was not such a good idea after all.

This is when you will begin to get discouraged. But you should not allow this to happen. In reality, the entire learning process of playing the guitar is a fun and entertaining activity.

It's true that at some point, you may look at others playing and ask yourself: "What is it that they have that I don't." Your progress may seem slow to you and your playing not much good, but in reality, you are making progress deep inside of you, and thus, should not sweat the learning process too much.

Every guitarist will come to a point where he will doubt his abilities. Enough practice and study should overcome these problems. The more hours you practice old and new techniques, the better you will get at playing.

Instead of getting depressed about not accomplishing as much as you want, you need to stop and appreciate the music for what it is. Become inspired by music and by your mistakes.

Let your mistakes be the stepping stones to make you a better student and drive you to study and practice more. In music you can't compare your ability to that of others. It just does not work that way. Music is not a sport. When you measure your abilities against those of others you end up not reaching your full potential.

Learning to play the electric guitar is like learning art. Because what should be important here, is that you acquire a means to express yourself. And that the skills you develop should be sufficient to allow you to accurately and effectively put across to your listeners, the emotions and messages you want to convey to them.

Allow me to explain my point of view a bit further: I once knew an electric guitarist who is now very famous. This guitarist had and still has a pretty lousy guitar technique. He sometimes plays out of tune and knows very little music theory, but he knows how to express what he want musically, and this is what makes him the great guitarist he is today.

He never compared himself to others, just wanted to play for the sake of the music, and this is what made him a great guitarist, that desire and perseverance, the need to express himself.

This is what you should aim for when you study the electric guitar. Instead of getting frustrated with the technical side of the lessons, make yourself dig deep inside of you and let who you are, come out in your playing.

Of course, you need to practice and remain focused on your electric guitar lessons, but if you don't first excel, or you don't remember everything that is being taught..." Don't sweat it." Just keep on trying and you will get good. You just have to keep taking lessons and keep practicing.
