I have used gratitude for years, yet this morning it took on a much deeper meaning after I woke with excruciating pain in my neck. Whenever I moved any part of my body, even an eyelash my neck would spasm. The pain was so intense that I screamed out each time a new spasm hit, until it let up. Twenty minutes after taking a large dose of Motrin I was able to make my way upstairs to the heating pad.
The first thing I noticed was that I was not satisfied with my usual cover for my legs and I took out a luxurious goose down comforter and snuggled in it while I applied heat and strong pressure to my neck. I thought how wonderful the comforter felt tucked around my body and I was grateful. I was finally able to make my way to the hot bath where a very unusual happening occurred. Since I was moving at turtle speed or slower I was able to notice everything. When the shampoo smell hit my nose I was enveloped with such gratitude. It was my usual brand, yet it smelled heavenly. Next my mind was filled with gratitude for other things I normally experience each day without notice. Such as, it meant so much to me to have hot water from a very old heating source. I was grateful my tub was cast iron and was able to hold the heat a very long time. Amazing the blow dryer for my hair was still working and I think it is about 15 years old (my neck still needed heat).
Such little things meant so much along with going into automatic pilot of self-nurturing. I wanted to wear only soft clothing and comfortable shoes. All my senses were heightened due to the extreme pain and through self-nurturing and gratitude I was able to be up and ready to head out the door to my daily routine...almost on time.
I want to invite you to take notice of where self-nurturing and gratitude might help you in your daily life. Whether you are experiencing physical or emotional pain stop long enough to ask yourself, "Where do I need self-nurturing and what am I grateful for today?" As I learned today, the more pain you are in the more awareness you will have and the faster you will heal!
If you are going through any loss, such as a divorce, apply gratitude and self-nurturing to your days and see if your life improves!
