These days it seems as though everyone has gone electronic. We live in the Information Age and if you want to know the answer to any question you can simply ask Google. This is all well and good but the downside is that kids don't want to read books anymore.
Most kids prefer to spend their free time watching movies or playing video games. When they reluctantly do their homework they use the Internet for research. But it's not often you'll find a teenager sitting down engrossed in a good book.
This really is a sad state of affairs because reading is a great way to learn and also to escape from every day life. Here are three reasons why you should encourage your kids to read more.
1. Expand their vocabulary
Reading books will expand their vocabulary and improve their communication skills. Children who read regularly tend to have better writing skills than those who don't.
Strong reading skills will also help your kids in later life when they need to read and understand credit card contracts and insurance policies. It will even help with understanding instructions for when they want to put flat pack furniture together or install that new wireless router.
2. Improve their creative skills
Books are a great way to escape to another world where imaginations can run riot. Reading Science Fiction is a great way to improve creative skills because you suspend beliefs and get caught up in a world where anything can happen.
3. Keep their mind healthy and focused
Reading is also a great way to keep minds active and engaged. We all understand the benefits of exercising our bodies to stay fit and healthy, but the same is true of our minds too.
Developing a habit of reading regularly will keep their minds health and focused. A focused mind is a calm mind that can cope with life's difficult challenges and stay calm under pressure.
4. Improve their awareness about the world
Books are a great way to make sure your children have a better understanding of the world around them. They can read stories set in different cultures or counties, they can also learn about historical events and how the past has impacted on their lives today.
Simply by picking up a book you can travel the world, travel through time, walk in someone else's shoes and learn something new without even thinking about it!
