The term "healthy diet" can be very vague. People are often unsure how many pieces of vegetables and fruit they should be having each day, how many grams of salt and how much sugar. A healthy diet when pregnant can be so confusing that you find yourself living off lettuce leaves and natal vitamins. So here is a guide of foods to eat when pregnant and foods to avoid too.
Now the worst thing you can tell a pregnant woman is that she can't eat something in particular. Why? Because it sets her cravings mad! The minute she can't have something it seems like her body can't live without it! However, there are a few ways that you can trick your body into submission. If you have a sweet tooth then why not go mad with fruit? Fruit is full of anti-oxidants, nutrients and vitamins and is definitely on the good food list but it's also sweet so will give you a pretend sugar fix. Feeling a bit cheated? Why not pop some cream on top? Good for the calcium and makes you feel good. Potatoes, rice, pasta and pulses are great when you're pregnant as they give you a much needed energy boost. No longer will you need 4 cups of coffee to get through the day!
When you become pregnant, there are foods you should avoid and foods that are an absolute no no! The foods to avoid include fatty foods, take-aways, fast foods, anything saturated in fat and anything high in sugar. You should also try and steer clear of alcohol and caffeine too. This is the healthy diet part. The following foods are real no no's and should not be eaten. Raw seafood such as sushi. Soft cheeses such as blue cheese (stick with hard cheeses that have been processed as they will not contain listeria, a bad bacteria for babies). Any undercooked or raw meat (if in doubt cook it until its char grilled). Liver and pate (they are full of vitamin A, too much of which can adversely affect the development of your baby). These are not safe foods to eat when pregnant and can seriously harm your baby or even increase the risk of miscarriage.
So now you know what foods you should be avoiding and what foods to eat when pregnant, you can heave a sigh of relief and start to enjoy your pregnancy knowing that you are doing your very best to ensure the health of your baby.
