The thought of having a hearing test can be a very daunting thing, however it really needn't be. Hearing tests are specifically devised to asses your hearing at different levels. The initial hearing consultation can take place at any accredited test centre. Many companies, however recognise the fact that some people may be apprehensive about taking a hearing test - especially their first one. Therefore, some companies will visit you in the comfort of your own home. Following an initial consultation, a full hearing tests is often scheduled which will allow for the best diagnosis possible. Here are a few things that you can come to expect at your hearing test.

History

The audiologist will ask you questions about your medical history. They will want to know if you've been exposed to any loud noises or had any recent damage to your ears. They may also ask about your family history in relation to hearing loss.

Take a Look

The audiologist will look in your ears to check for any waxy blockages or to see if there are any signs of infection that could be affecting your hearing.

Sound Booth

Most tests will include a sound booth. This part of the test takes place inside a soundproof room or booth. The audiologist then plays a series of sounds which you will listen to through headphones. The audiologist will then require you to let them know when you hear the sound - this is normally done by raising you hand or pressing a button.

Speech Test

Often a speech test will be included as part of your general hearing test. Similarly this test may take place in a sound proof room or booth. This time you will hear a words, rather than sounds, and you will be asked to repeat them. The tone of these words will vary from hard to soft. The purpose of this test is to see at which point the hearer can understand speech.

Questions

Throughout the whole procedure of a hearing test, from consultation right through to results you should feel free to ask any questions you want. Being fully aware of what is happening to you will ultimately make you feel more confident about having a hearing test.

The audiologist will be able to inform you when your results will be available. At this point you can begin looking into different options and hearing appliances that may aid your condition.
