Although hypertension may occur singly, people do not know that other underlying causes can also trigger the disease. In particular, diabetes and obesity are two of the major cases that seem to have a direct relationship with the onset of high blood pressure. You have to determine the factors that trigger the symptoms, and find the right preventive measures.

1. Diabetes and High Blood Pressure

Diabetes is an incurable condition wherein the body lacks that ability to properly absorb insulin. The person thereby can experience changes in blood glucose levels. The blood pressure, in turn, will also fluctuate because of the condition. The person's blood pressure can shoot up when blood sugar levels are very high. Normal blood pressure for individuals without diabetes is below 130/80. The affected individual can display a variety of symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, shortness of breath, vision problems and chest or abdominal pain. Mild or moderate cases can occur without any symptom. A lot of diabetics actually do not realize that they have hypertension.

2. Obesity and High Blood Pressure

Obesity is highly related to high blood pressure, since very high amounts of cholesterol and fats can lead to narrowing or clogging of the blood vessels. The blood flowing through the veins and arteries will greatly be compromised and the heart will need to pump faster to distribute enough blood to all systems and the parts that need it. Obesity is generally caused by genetics, unhealthy eating and lack of exercise or physical activity. Very fatty areas also tend to put a lot of pressure on the blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure.

Obese individuals with high blood pressure usually have blood pressure of about 130/80 and above. People who do not eat healthily or those who live very sedentary lifestyles are usually the most prone to developing the two problems.

3. Preventive Measures

There are several approaches to prevent diabetes and obesity from occurring. First of all, people need to watch their weight and have a very healthy diet. Excess fat and weight can lead to high blood pressure. You need to eat a balanced diet with low saturated, trans and overall fat. These foods should be low in sodium and cholesterol. Eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts and lean cuts of chicken, fish and meat. Drink non-fat or skimmed milk. You should also quit smoking, since the activity leads to narrowing of the blood vessels. Nicotine also has an effect that triggers the rising of blood pressure. Drink less alcohol or only consume in moderate amounts.

4. Healthy Weight

It is important that you maintain healthy body weight through exercise. People should find time to exercise, especially if they have very sedentary jobs. Cardiovascular activity is advised so that the heart gets pumped up regularly and blood gets distributed well to all the organs and systems. Jog, brisk walk or stair climb for 30 to 60 minutes 2 to 4 times each week. You can also do some weight training or play sports like tennis, basketball or swimming to burn more calories, cholesterol and fat.

5. Taking Medications

Some people need to take medications and drugs to alleviate the effects of both diabetes and obesity. Diabetic medications mainly work to help the body absorb insulin properly, while antihypertensive drugs can help obese individuals control their blood pressure well. There are other herbs and supplements that can manage the symptoms well too.
