Trout fishing is one of America's favorite past times. Trout are pretty smart, so catching them can be a little tricky. Here is some basic trout fishing information to get you started.

Trout can be found in North America, Europe, Northern Asia, and even the Ocean. Cool, clear, fresh water is what the trout prefer. However, some trout will head to the ocean during their adulthood and return to their original fresh water spot when it is time for them to spawn. Yes, trout are related to salmon and also return home to spawn.

Information about the different species of trout can be helpful as they do have different characteristics which will aid you when trying to snag them. The truth is, though, that there are not as many species of trout as one might think. Why? Because trout tend to adapt their coloring and patterning to the area where they are feeding.

It is a fact that the Colorado River and Yellowstone cutthroats are the same fish genetically. They look different because they live in different environments. So this little tidbit will help you to know that perhaps you don't need quite as many tricks up your sleeve to catch a multitude of different species.

One of the biggest things of importance to know about trout is that they use camouflage just like many other animals and insects As mentioned above, they change colors and patterns to adapt to their environment. Lucky you if you happen to spot a new comer to the area. In spite of their camouflage abilities, a trout that has changed homes recently will not have adjusted his coloring yet so should be easy to spot.

And yes, trout do like to hide. They typically remain uder the rocks or outcroppings even when feeding. That is important information so that you know where to cast your line. If you are casting where there are no trout, then we would say the trout are smarter than you.

The type of bait trout prefer is another piece of trout fishing information that can be helpful. Again, once you become more experienced, you will want to study the different type of bait that the different species of trout feed on. To get started, you can guess that almost any trout will feed on nightcrawlers or worms. Mayflies, caddis flies, and stone flies are other bait trout like for feeding.
