Everyone should know how to protect themselves on the street. Learning one of the martial arts styles or taking self defense class can be helpful, but it may not be enough. These tips and suggestions can you help you in the unfortunate event that you are fact to face with a mugger.

Money is the attacker's prime motivation in robbery cases, and in many cases these crimes are committed with the threat of force or the actual use of force.

Use Common Sense and Stay Alert

- Don't walk alone, especially late at night. Stay in groups.

- Let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be there.

- Stay in areas that are well-lit and not isolated.

- Walk on the sidewalks and stay away from darkened doorways, bushes, and alleys where attackers may be hiding.

- Walk with confidence and keep moving. Don't stop to talk to strangers.

- Be aware of everything that is going on around you.

- Report suspicious behavior to the police.

- Don't carry a lot of cash or wear expensive jewelry

What to do if Someone Tries to Rob You

- Don't fight over your property. Your life is more important than money and jewelry.

- Notify the police. Try to give them the most accurate description possible.

- Scream, and remember that people are more likely to respond if you yell "Fire!" than if you scream, "Help!"

ATM Safety Tips

- Use the ATMs inside banks and other buildings rather than stand-alone terminals.

- Before you begin a transaction, look around. If you notice anything that looks suspicious, cancel the transaction and find another ATM to use.

- Never count your money as you are walking away, with the cash visible in your hands. Put your money away quickly.

- Remember that you can even be robbed while using the ATM from your car. Be aware of everything that is going on around you.

Get Involved

Home robberies can be very frightening. Often robbers try to break into your home when they know you are going to be away. However, sometimes they are surprised to find that the owner is still at home, and this is when things have a chance to turn bad. If your neighborhood doesn't have a neighborhood watch program, talk with police about tips for forming one in your area.

If you notice suspicious activity anywhere - at home, the park, or the office - notify the policy. You can report unusual behavior through your police departments non-emergency number.

Help for Victims

Despite our best efforts to avoid danger, the reality is that some people will become victims or robbery. If this happens, it can be very traumatic, and victims should seek support from professional counselors or support groups. It can also be helpful for victims to find a way to empower themselves, whether by learning one of the many martial arts styles of self defense or taking steps to make sure others don't become victims too.
