There is a lot of information out there regarding hearing loss in young children and many myths surrounding the subject also. One of the most popular myths being that accurate hearing tests cannot be performed on children until they reach an age of five or six when in fact with advancements in technology accurate testing can be performed within a few hours of a child being born.

Armed with this information if you suspect your child is having hearing difficulties then it is imperative that you get it checked out as soon as possible as if left un detected can lead to developmental delays such as speech and language problems.

If the hearing impairment goes UN detected or treated until for example a child is approximately two or three it may be too late for full intervention and the child will more than likely suffer from permanent learning difficulties with their speech and language skills. If detected earlier however, intervention can begin straight away and the child will benefit from all the technology and speech and language treatment that is currently available helping them to overcome any hearing loss they may have.

A lot of people will associate hearing problems with either being deaf or not when it just isn't that simple. In the case of the child parents may dismiss that their child has a hearing problem because they are responding to sounds and voices. In reality a child suffering from mild hearing loss can develop speech and language skills yet still miss over half of what is being said to them. In these cases the child will probably suffer in other areas of their academic journey as a result.

Losing your hearing is extremely scary at any age but the stress applied when it is a child is enormous, not only for the child in question but also for the family. The child will not understand what is going around them and will find it difficult and extremely frustrating when performing tasks that with 100% hearing they would find easy. It won't take long for this frustration to boil over and can make everybody's life a misery.

If you suspect your child of having hearing difficulties then it won't do you or your child any harm to have it looked at. If it turns out that that do have permanent hearing loss to some degree then this isn't the end of the world either. Your audiologist will advise in more detail but there are many digital hearing aids out there that are extremely discrete and even models that are specifically designed for young children. Don't take a chance get your Childs ears checked.
