When choosing the best self defense style to learn, all you really need to know is a little background information. Once you've found your interest, the trainer will lead you through the entire process. Self defense training is also sometimes referred to as combat self defense training and martial arts, depending on the type of instruction and specialty training you receive. Self-defense methods were originally used to train soldiers and other personnel charged with military fighting. However, today they have become more commonly used for street self defense, sport, fitness, and a means to improve self-confidence - especially for youth and teens. There are a number of disciplines to learn from, and each one has a set of defining characteristics that make it unique from the rest.

Once you have chosen your favorite form to learn, you should take instruction from a qualified teacher. Through persistent training your skills and abilities will continue to increase. The history of the martial arts date back to ancient China, where they were practiced entirely as a means of defense against an aggressor in times of war.

Some disciplines incorporate unarmed techniques, some armed techniques, and still others employ both techniques in training people in combat self defense. In all disciplines, the goal is to bring the opponent to a point of submission or to render him unable to finish his attack. Some use weapons, other emphasize joint locks, still others the swift and adept maneuvering of swords, knives, daggers and other specialized equipment. In sparring situations where the goal is to practice rather than defend, specialized wooden weapons are used by both opponents to prevent serious injury.

The oldest types of self defense known are the martial arts which emphasize striking. Usually unarmed, fighters work to strike their opponents at the body's weakest and most vulnerable points. Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and kickboxing are all disciplines that focus heavily on striking maneuvers. In sporting events rules usually dictate that fighters make strikes to the upper torso.

Joint lock arts are especially challenging. In these martial arts disciplines, practitioners must master the art of pushing and manipulating joints until their opponents experience extreme discomfort and are forced to give up the fight and submit. For smaller contestants, this method is particularly useful, as the techniques can be performed on opponent now matter how great the size disadvantage. One of the most popular disciplines that utilizes joint locking moves is Aikido. Aikido is very challenging to learn and can require years and years of dedicated training to master.

A more defined method of self defense is the joint lock arts. A person must learn how to push and manipulate an opponent's joints past their comfort level. This is a very effective method to use when a small person defends themselves against a much larger person. Aikido is a type of joint lock arts technique. These type of techniques require years of study and are very difficult to master.
