A new entrant in the smartphone category this month is the Google, Nexus One, with the Android 2.1 operating system. Manufactured by HTC Corporation of Taiwan, the phone has many interesting features. Coming in an unlocked state the phone can be used with any mobile network provider that uses GSM frequencies of 1900, 850, 1800, 900 and UMTS 1, 8 and 4 frequency bands. By spring this year Google is planning to launch the CDMA version and one model for Vodafone in Europe.

The Nexus One measure 4.7 inches long, 2.5 inches wide and has a thickness of 0.45 inches. The display screen is 3.7 inches and has an aspect ratio of 3:5. With the battery, the phone weighs about four and half ounces and is easy to carry around. The phone uses a mAH battery which gives a talk time of 10 hours or browsing for 5 hours. The standby capacity is about 290 hours. As for the storage the phone's flash memory is 512 MB and comes equipped with a microSD slot with a 4GB card, which can be expanded to a maximum of 32 GB.

The input for the Nexus One is through a fully functional touchscreen and on-screen navigation by an illumined track ball. The phone also supports a feature which lets you transcribe text from voice. For clarity, the device has got two microphones, one on either side, developed by Audience which will reduce any noises in the background while talking. The 5 megapixel built-in camera is equipped by an LED flash, and can also take video footage in 720 x 480 pixels.

The phone has an advanced 1 Ghz Snapdragon CPU, capable of delivering a video playback at 720 p. It also supports MPEG-4 video, and plays MP3, WAV, MIDI, AAC+ and Ogg Vorbis formats. As for image formats it can display PNG, GIF, BMP and JPEG files.

The Nexus One's Google Android operating system gives the user access to over 20,000 applications. The ones already installed can be accessed through a single button and then scrolled down. The 2.1 version of the operating system has added aesthetics like animated wall papers which change as per the different inputs. There is a Media Gallery by Cooliris which is integrated that allows you to edit, browse and share videos and photos. A hack provides you with the option of installing additional software on 190 MB of the flash memory, but the warranty will become void. Google is planning to modify this after managing certain security concerns.

The unlocked version of Google's Nexus One comes at a price of $529, available through the official website. A version of the phone with a T-Mobile connection having a two year contract with a single plan is available for $179. This plan has a monthly rate of $79.99 which gives unlimited web data and MMS and texting, and also 500 minutes of free talk time. The plan covers unlimited talk time during weekends and nights.
