We've all checked our emails, charged our electricals and maybe even made the odd cheeky phone call at the companies expense. I'm sure there are a few that would admit to popping a personal letter into the post room and sliding the odd pen into their pocket. These naughty little acts represent just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to office theft.
When it comes to the odd pen, ruler or notebook, many workers think that office supplies are there for the taking. Often scoring office supplies is seen as one of the perks of having to work in an office. We all spend so much time encased in those four office walls it seems only fair that we can get a few freebies right? WRONG.
Office theft - yes that's what it is, theft - gets much bigger than this with some crafty tea leafs getting away with lifting chairs computers and even desks. Plants and other decorative fittings are other things that a very naughty 2% have admitting to stealing from the office.
The strange thing is that whilst most of us would never dream of taking a pen from a shop or a friend's house, the thought of taking something from ones office doesn't even register as a crime for most. There have been many theories on why this is. Some people regard the office and all its people as a second family. This mentality leads to a kind of 'what's yours is mine' attitude to office supplies. Another theory is that big businesses such as banks and large corporate organisers are often regarded as faceless organisations. Stealing a few small items from a name or a brand doesn't seem to evoke a conscious in the way that stealing from an individual would.
Dealing with office theft can be tricky but it's surely best nipped in the bud before it has the chance to escalate. What may have started with an odd pen can easily lead to a whole pack of pens. Then a pen holder to put the pens in, some paper clips staples and drawing pins (got to fill out the pen holder). Next thing you know they'll have taken a desk to put the pen holder on and a chair to match the desk!
On the other hand, chances are you'll never be able to stop workers stealing pens. All you can do is keep your office supplies in order and make sure you've always got enough!
