The key to learning any new skill lies in mastering the basics. When learning to play an instrument, this is especially important because if you do not know the basics, you cannot fully develop your skill. When it comes to learning to play the guitar, some of the basics you should learn first include the proper care of your instrument and how to play individual notes. If you are teaching yourself or taking beginner guitar lessons, one of the first things you should learn is how to take care of your guitar. Like any instrument, the guitar is fragile and if you do not care for it properly it will not work and you will not be able to play it. Tuning, replacing broken strings, and storage are three essential elements you must learn in regards to caring for your guitar.

Once you have mastered these skills your beginner guitar lessons can move forward in teaching you how to actually play your instrument. The guitar is composed of a set of six strings stretched over an opening in the hollow body of the guitar. Each string, when plucked, sounds a different note because each string varies in thickness. When you press down on a string in certain places along the neck a new note will sound. Most guitar lessons for beginners will start with teaching you the notes on the open strings and then progressing to learn how to play other notes and, eventually, to create chords by playing multiple notes at once. Before you can learn to play chords, however, you must take the time to familiarize yourself with individual notes so that you can recognize them quickly and so your fingers will become comfortable positioning themselves on the strings.

Chords are the fundamental part of any song. A guitarist creates the music we all hear by strumming different chords. It is that simple. However, some chords are trickier than others. But in beginner guitar lessons, only the simplest chords will be learned. Once the student has practiced enough and gained a good deal of confidence, more challenging chords and transitions may be made available. Once you have mastered these basic skills in your beginner guitar lessons you will be able to move on to the intermediate level, but do not rush yourself - the more you practice in the beginning, the better the guitarist you will be later on.
