In the present world it’s quite safe to say that – there is no medical practice that can ignore nursing. Consequently it would be of no surprise that many universities offer full scale courses on nursing. However for many the impact of the global nursing fraternity remains rather unknown. The following lines will however establish where they stand as of today –
The Florence Nightingale Declaration Campaign (Wikipedia Web Site) – established by nursing leaders throughout the world, aims to achieve two United Nations Resolutions for adoption by the UN General Assembly of 2008, namely; the international Year of the Nurse -2010 and The UN Decade for a Healthy World – 2011 to 2020. Both of these events and their dates have close associations with Florence Nightingale; popularly known as the ‘The Lady with the Lamp’.
Florence Nightingale is considered to be the women who pioneered the science of nursing. In fact if it wasn’t for her efforts, nursing wouldn’t have reached where it is today. Let alone there never would have been a discipline called ‘Nursing’. Florence Nightingale has been epitomized by male historians as ‘the lady with the lamp’: a caring woman, nursing soldiers in the Crimean war (Woodham-Smith, 1951).
Florence Nightingale was not just a pioneer in the nursing field; she was also a talented writer and an innovative statistician. She remains to be role model for a lot of women around the world as she was a passionate advocate of the women’s movement i.e. she was involved in defining feminism during her time. This is mainly attributed to the way she lived her life, she was unique in the way she carried herself. In many ways she was an iconic figure of her time – and her admirers have never seemed to reduce in number.
Florence Nightingale remains popular to this day because it’s only now that people are beginning to contemplate the odds against which she had achieved such spectacular success. To be more specific – she was from a high class English family, that too during the Victorian era. These were times during which society was extremely patriarchal. In spite of which Florence Nightingale defied the existing status quo and rallied for the women’s movement. Her own family was not very appreciative of her endeavors.
However she brought extraordinary professionalism into the nursing realm. Her ground breaking work during the Crimean war bought her intense fame and recognition. Moreover she was humble enough to realize and admit the mistakes she made i.e. during her times at Scutari she understood that overcrowding and lack of hygiene were the reasons why so many soldiers had died at the hospital. Here on after she was involved in making efficient hospital designs and as expected was able – to reduce the mortality rate significantly.
Even though today’s nursing realm has come a long way from its initial days. This realm still has immense potential. However there is a void when it comes to realizing professionalism.
