I remember my first guitar lessons. They were fun, yet tedious. I felt pressured to keep up with the instructor and the rest of the class learning chords, tabs, picking, strumming, tuning, and so on. It was quite a challenge for a new guitarist, and I was beginning to question my initial decision to take lessons in the first place - that is, until we started playing some easy guitar songs. The moment I realized I was playing "Wild Thing" was the same moment I realized how fun the guitar could be. This is such an important lesson for students and instructors alike. Playing guitar should never be about exercises, memorization, and perfection. It should be about learning all the components of music played on guitar. It should be a fun and worthwhile experience, not a continuously frustrating and exhausting endeavor toward mastering a pointless ability.

There are many easy guitar songs for beginners to have in their lessons. Of course, learning some of the basics first is essential. But even by the second or third lesson, try whipping out "Wild Thing" or "Smoke on the Water." A professional guitarist or instructor will have many ideas about what to start with. The real key here is actually implementing this technique in lessons. Songs are important. Students will be that much more excited to learn and play when they know what they are playing and have heard it before.

Easy guitar songs are not necessarily hard to come by even for the inexperienced guitarist. The internet has a plethora of different websites and song lists to experiment with. Also, if the new guitarist has not yet signed up for lessons, then that may be a good idea. Instructors often have access to some resources that students may not be able to find anywhere else. Such lessons can be registered for on an online guitar-teaching website, or at a local music academy. Even the music departments in colleges and high schools are worth looking into. You never know what opportunities you may stumble across.

Last, but not least, learning easy guitar songs helps beginners get a good grip on tablature. Playing the song is a blast, of course, but the chords, rhythms and adjustments are especially difficult to memorize. Hard copies of the music are great to have close by. Just make sure any dues are paid for the music. You do not want to get in trouble with the law if that may become an issue. So get out there and learn some songs!
