Tiki totem poles are beautiful carved wooden decorations for indoors or out. Handcrafted tiki totem poles combine the traditional imagery of the tiki gods of Polynesia with the style of totem poles better known from Northwest Coast Native American tribes.

There are many parallels between the history of tiki figures and the history of carved totem poles, though they originated many miles apart. Both were originally created centuries ago, and the meanings behind the carved figures from both cultures are not always well understood. The beautiful and symbolic figures of this unique fusion of cultures would be a beautiful addition to your tiki bar, backyard, or island themed living room.

Tiki imagery originated from the Polynesian islands. Because little is known of their ancient history, there are several beliefs surrounding the origins and meanings of the tiki figure. This humanoid carving is often said to represent an ancestor or god. Throughout Polynesia, carved tiki figures can often be seen at the entrances to religious sites. Tiki carvings have become a symbol of ancient Polynesian customs and religion.

In Alaska, Canada, and the Northwestern United States, many Indian tribes carved spiritual monuments from local trees. Many tribes became known for their expertise with this art. Often, these monuments incorporated the symbolism of animals or gods. Like the tikis of Polynesia, there is still much mystery surrounding the origins of the totem pole, although it is understood that the exact animal depicted is central to the meaning of the pole, in much the same way as the manner of carving the tiki god s face reflected the meaning of the tiki.

Countless totem poles were carved to depict major historical events or a family history. Other totem poles were built for specific purposes, such as embarrassing a rival clan for unpaid debts, welcoming visitors, or marking territory or burial sites. In North America, the meaning of totem poles, which varies according to the tribal group that made them, may also include legends or symbolic figures representing an individual. According to many Native American tribes, upon adulthood a tribe member is spiritually connected to an animal that will remain with him throughout his lifetime, guiding major decisions.

Today, the term totem has come to represent any carved wooden pole, particularly one which includes carved people or animals along its entire length. The distinctive tiki totem pole style blends elements from both cultures to create an artistic and symbolic work of art. No two tiki totem poles are the same. Following the tradition of hand carving from both Polynesia and the Pacific Northwest, every tiki totem pole is painstakingly crafted from solid wood.

These poles are available in a wide range of lengths, making them a great choice for both indoors and out. Though a full length tiki totem carved from an entire log is a beautiful statement piece for the backyard, a figurine or tabletop sized symbolic tiki totem is also a wonderful choice for those who love the symbolism of island or tribal culture. Choosing a tiki totem design that has relevance in your life will make the statue even more important for you.
