Brownsville is one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities of Texas, United States.This city enjoys the status of being the county seat of Cameron County.It is the fifteenth largest city of Texas State with a population of about 139,722 according to 2000 census.

This is one of the major cities of the Brownsville Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

This excellent city is founded in the year 1848 by a businessman known as Charles Stillman.It offers some of the best things in form of language, history, culture along with a varied range of attractions.

The history of the Brownsville will take to the exploration and subsequent colonization around the area by Spain.With the take over of Mexico, the colonization began in the year 1748 around the Rio Grande River.This was the area where the city of Brownsville was located.

In the year 1765, the area around the Rio Grande River was located under the name of San Juan De los Esteros Hermosos.The name of the area was changed to Matamoros in honor to martyred priest known as Mariano Matamoros.

In the year 1835, it declared itself as an independent region from Mexico which resulted into a war.This war was fought at San Jacinto in the year 1836 and won by the Texans.Texas was then became the part of United States in the year 1845 and the Fort Taylor was named as Fort Brown after the Major Jacob Brown who lost his life during the war.

By the end of the war, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the area was named as Brownsville after Fort Brown.

Brownsville is situated at the border of outstanding Gulf of Mexico border.This city of Texas is known for its facilities and convenience provided to the travelers along with several mesmerizing attractions.This is the best place to watch marvelous and exquisite birds.It is also the proud organizer of Brownsville International Birding Festival which takes place in the month of February every year.

Gladys Porter Zoo is one of the most prominent and must visit attractions of Brownsville.The motto of the zoo is to preserve the nature and ecosystem through education and conservation.

It also houses some of the world s finest collections of reptiles.It houses more than 1,500 specimens of more than 400 species out of which almost 50 species are included under the endangered category.

Another must visit attraction of the city is The Historic Brownsville Museum and especially if you have children with you then you would not afford to miss it.This magnificent building houses a range of exhibits that helps to understand the events of the past.The architecture of the building is a great example of a perfect blend of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.
