All through history mankind has constantly managed to be on some kind of conflict with fellow human beings. As a result, mankind has managed to use precious metals and other materials to create weapons of great destruction. Although weapons have aided many a cause, weapons have become the backbone of wars. Hence, many kingdoms and civilizations have fallen, and as time passes weapons have become more and more advance. Today we are going to take a brief look at weapons used as far back as cavemen and the medieval ages.
What is a weapon? A weapon is a tool used to forcefully cause damage or harm to a person, animal, or structure. Although weapons, more often not, have been used to spill countless human blood, weapons can also be used for hunting and self defense. Therefore, first lets travel to the time of our ancestors, the caveman, and see what type of weapons they used.
Cavemen (prehistoric weapons) Although caveman did in fact used weapons such as clubs and spears, these weapons are not called caveman weapons, a more accurate name will be prehistoric weapons. Prehistoric weapons were very simple and they were used about five million years ago, perhaps longer. As mentioned above, prehistoric weapons consisted of clubs, spears, and unshaped stones.
o Example: Throwing spears, schoninger speere, wooden spears, and throwing sticks.
Ancient and classical weapons Although this weapons where very similar to their predecessors, there was a major advancement. By the time this ancient and classical weapons where created, mankind had started using copper, bronze, and other types of metal to create better, longer lasting weapons that will inflict more damage. During this time mankind had also started domesticating animals and using them for labor and war. Mankind had also started using tactics and organization, creating better and bigger armies with better weapons.
Weapons of the Middle ages During this period mankind had greatly advanced and so had weapons. By this time weapons where used both for offence and defense. A great example of a defensive weapon would be a suit of armor used by nights during the middle ages. During the middle ages gunpowder was also a new material that revolutionized the way weapons where made. As a result, a lot of long raged weapons where created like the cannons and trebuchet.
Modern Weapons Today weapons are deadlier and better than ever, some are so deadly they could kill hundreds of people in seconds, like atomic bombs. Due to the huge advanced in technology weapons can be used on air, land, and even under water, and military techniques have never been more organized than they are now.
As you can see, humans and weapons have advance hand in hand. The more a human mind gains knowledge and power, the deadlier weapons become. Today, many weapons that where only fiction and dreams to our ancestors are reality, and many weapons that are fiction and dreams to us, will soon become reality. After all, weapons are always changing and evolving.
