Let’s face it. The cleaning business indeed lacks the glitz and glamour of other business types but it doesn’t mean it requires less of a business sense, knowledge or qualifications, only different. You still need to have the same total determination to succeed, the same absolute willingness to make customers happy and the same serious dedication to render the best job you could accomplish each time. Residential or consumer cleaning services such as maid services may not need much cleaning skills beyond sweeping, scrubbing or washing but definitely, commercial cleaning services such as janitorial services will often require training and more advanced skills.

If you decide to start a cleaning service for the consumer or residential market, you can opt to set up a maid service which you can run alone, if you want a simpler and smaller operations, or with hired employees so you can accept more clients and cleaning jobs. If you prefer the latter, you will be in charge of creating the schedule, handling inquiries and other issues with clients, purchasing cleaning supplies, doing the payroll, billing and all the other administrative duties. You may still want to involve yourself in cleaning tasks but very minimally, especially in the early days but as your business matures and gets bigger, you will find that you would have very little time to be with your team doing the cleaning. You can start your cleaning business, whether as a residential or commercial cleaning service provider, as a home based business initially. This makes sense since all your services will be performed in your clients’ facilities and premises. However, you have to know if the state or local community where you have your cleaning business allows this kind of home based operations as there are states that regulate the kind of business that can be established at home. If you want your cleaning business to be legal and profitable, you must comply with such regulations.

The last half century has seen many women joining or returning to join the work force so it’s not surprising to note that most of them would not have time to do household chores or would simply choose to spend their time at home to be with their family. This is where your residential cleaning business comes in. They would be double income families which would have the means to hire maid service like what you offer. Your other type of clients can be affluent families, senior people or single individuals who would neither have the tendency nor time to clean their own homes.

Commercial cleaning services typically includes janitorial services which people hire to clean big facilities where lots of people congregate such as hospitals, schools, offices or restaurants. One major difference of a commercial cleaning service from residential is that there are no “normal business hours” in the sense that office workers do, such as a “9 to 5” work schedule. Your clients will generally require you to come and clean their facilities after all the people have vacated their premises. Janitorial jobs are usually larger in scope than residential jobs.

Many successful cleaning service providers started small and the owners used their personal savings as initial capital. Part of their success came from re investing their first earnings to obtain more equipment and training to expand their operations.
