Buying the wedding veil is an indispensable part of your wedding preparations. You must have heard about the old wives’ tale that it was considered bad luck for a groom to catch a glimpse of his bride in her wedding dress before the wedding. This was the reason why a bride wore a veil as it concealed her face.

This custom has been carried on till this date. The reason for this is perhaps that the veil lends a bit of mystery to the bride; it tantalizes the groom as he strains himself to catch a glimpse of her. People no longer believe in old superstitions but the veil remains a symbolic method of ensuring that only when the groom becomes her husband is he able to see her face. The veil is also a symbol of purity and lends a pristine touch to the bride’s appearance on the day of the wedding.

Years have come and gone, and these veils have gone through various changes in the form of color and appearance. These days, one could sport any trend one wishes to. The basic varieties have been listed here:

•You could choose a simple white veil or a light semi transparent one with lots of embroidery and so on. These veils are usually termed ‘cathedral veils’, they are traditionally as long as the cathedral aisle and are embellished with seed pearls and crystals. These veils are worn by fastening them on to the bride’s hair with the aid of hairpins. Then the veil is dropped over her face. However, cathedral veils are extremely light and prove to be of no hindrance at all.

•Another sort of veil that imparts a different sort of beauty to the bride is the Spanish veil. How is it different, you ask? Well, firstly, they are not meant to cover the bride’s face at all! They are supposed to frame it instead. They are heavier compared to Cathedral veils and are embellished with a lot of lace and pearls. There is a light and transparent variety as well, and they are also known by the name of ‘Mantilla’.

•Then there are the elbow length veils which are fixed onto the bride’s hair with the help of pins. More often than not, they are layered and this gives them a unique appearance. As the name indicates, they are quite short compared to cathedral veils and hence easier to tackle. The edges are trimmed with lace and most often the layers are created with uneven numbers making them more prominent. These veils, unlike the Spanish ones, cover the face of the bride during the wedding ceremony.

Thus, these are the overall kinds of veils that are available for a bride. However, choose your wedding dress before buying your veil as your veil must complement your dress and not the other way around. Different wedding dresses demand different kinds of veils. You could either choose one on your own or depend upon your trusted wedding designer to do it for you.
