Childhood depression is described as depression which a child goes in his childhood days. There are many facts and suicidal attempts from the children. The suicidal attempt has become such a common phenomenon in children that if you ask any child about this the answer would be ‘yes’. How exactly can be childhood depression be defined?
Childhood depression can be defined as an illness when the feelings of depression persist in a child and interfere with child’s ability to function well and normal. Feelings of depression are said to be represented in forms of changes in physical, mental, psychological as well as social changes. There are few other symptoms of childhood depression and those are irritability, loss of appetite as well as physical changes like lack of interest, sleep and weight. It affects their studies too as there is lack of attention or concentration and these child feel lack in participating in anything as they feel they might get rejected due to some or the other reason.
These symptoms are very much same which is there in adult depression also. But the main changes are that in childhood depression the main symptom is seen in bodily or physical changes as well as behavioral changes.
There are various types of childhood depression. But then there is no exact categorization available to us. Like one of the doctor says “typing the depression is difficult as fashion come and go and there comes various kinds of depression in each fashion stage”. There are various rapid mood shifts in children who are more prevalent and hence it becomes difficult to exactly categorize these kinds of behaviors in any kind of depression.
But there are various stages of childhood depression. Stages of childhood depression means in different age there are various depressions in child. Like at the age of three there may be feeding depression, tantrums as well as lack of playfulness. When they grow up by this age and around the age of three to five there may be problems or depressions when the child becomes accident prone. And there might be certain kind of phobias from one or the other things. After the age of five, some child may become so much conscious that he starts apologizing even for minute mistakes made like spilling of food, or forgetting to put away the clothes etc.
Children at the age of 6 8 show depression in the form of some physical complaints as well as aggressive behaviors. At the age of 9 to 12 the depression in children may represents the symptoms of morbid thoughts and lying awake and worrying about their school homework etc. These shows that depression finds no particular age to attack, it can happen to anyone at any age.
There are different treatments available for childhood depression but the main thing is that you should understand enough to know the problem of your child. Secondly rather than getting angry on him, you should make him realize his/ her mistakes and appreciates on his/her good works. Counseling also help these children recover from their bad depression mood.
