One of the great benefits of living in areas with a lot of live music and local festivals is the exposure that you get to new acts. It can be difficult to find new favorites if you have to go to all the different venue websites to check out their upcoming events - that's a time consuming project- so unless your employment somehow revolves around checking out bands (and congratulations to you if you have indeed scored such a gig) then you probably have other things to do with your time. Finding out about local concerts is best when you're got a one-stop-shop kind of place to go to see everything that is going on in your area.
Different people have different techniques for finding new bands. Some people figure out which venues are the most likely to bring in bands that they really dig, and so always check out who will be playing there. Other people tend to rely on music reviewers or friends to figure out who the next favorite might be. Other people still hit up festivals to look for new music knowing that they if nothing else they have pretty good odds of being able to check out a lot of different bands and if all else fails, they don't have to leave the event if they don't like one particular band- wandering off to listen to someone else is always an option. Yet another strategy for finding new bands to love is to check out the opening act. Sure, arriving fashionably late to a show just in time to see the headliner can be convenient, but often the bands that are chosen to open are on their way up, and checking them out while they are touring with a bigger name is a great way to try them out risk-free. After all, the worst-case scenario is that you end up hanging outside for half an hour waiting for them to finish up so you can see the band you really came to see.
All said and done, finding upcoming events to attend and local concerts to enjoy has become a lot easier as technology has become more advanced. You don't need to score local papers to find out what's going on, and you can easily take a listen to upcoming bands in the same sitting. Nothing helps you make your mind up better than a preview of what's to come!
