To produce that harmonious, thumping sound you hear from your favorite bands, you must try to learn drums seriously. It's tempting to beat a drum in whatever rhythm or speed that pleases our ears and create that loud banging sound. However, drumming is more than that.

A person who has no knowledge of notations, tuning, setup, strokes, and other rudiments of the drums but is very interested in learning the drums will benefit the most from a formal drum lesson. You will be more able to gain appreciation of this instrument with drum lessons. It is quite easy to learn drums, especially the professional strokes. Let us start with the basics.

Time Signatures and Drum Notations

Are you clueless as to how to get your new drum kit rolling? To learn drums, you must first familiarize yourself with how to count time signatures. Understanding time signature is crucial in playing this instrument. You must have come across the phrases "half time" or "double time".

The time signatures indicate the number of notes or beats that are considered as one measure. Rock beats are usually played in 4/4 time signature, that is, each bar has four counts. Counting by 4 will serve as the basis of the drum beat. Let's take another signature: 7/8. The denominator indicates the value of the notes, while the numerator signifies that there are 7 notes in each bar.

Drum Rudiments

Drum rudiments are fundamental aspects of percussion music. It would be easier to learn drums if you practice drum rudiments. They are used in drumming exercises to practice stick control and wrist movement. Through drum rudiments, you would learn how to control the speed, power and movements of your fingers and wrists.

Drum rudiments condition your muscles to strike more forcefully, more accurately and faster. You may be surprised to know that there are around 40 rudiments. However, the majority of them are derived from the most basic rudiments so this time around, they will be easier to learn.

Drum rudiments can be broken down into five major classes: single strokes, double strokes, diddle strokes, drag strokes and flam strokes. Single strokes are good in improving speed and building stamina and strength in wrists and fingers.

The common variations of double strokes focus on wrist independence, stick control and speed. Diddle strokes, on the other hand, are more complex than the first two.

Holding the Drumsticks

Knowing the different ways to hold the drumsticks may be the last thing you need to know to learn drums, however, knowing the appropriate gripping technique can improve drum productivity. It would help you play with more bounce, control and movement.

The matched grip, the most common technique, allows for faster beats and movement. It requires both hands to grasp the sticks, with the palm facing downward. Either the thumb, index finger or middle finger could be used to grip the stick.

On the other hand, the traditional grip is like holding a chopstick. This technique is particularly preferred by jazz drummers because of its faster strokes and more dynamic control.

Notations, strokes and gripping techniques are what you need to know the most. As you can see, you should not spend grueling time and efforts to learn drums. In six months of continuous practice, you would be able to produce harmonious beats from the drum. Learning drums is easy after some time.
