Presbyopia is a common eye condition that many people will experience at some point in their lives. Because the main cause of this condition is simply the aging process, it would seem that there is little chance of escaping it altogether. However, presbyopia has different degrees and there are many treatments for it; so there is no need to worry that aging eyes will age your personal or professional image.
As the body ages, changes take place even in the eye. Beginning sometime in your 40's, you may notice (or may have noticed) that you have a new need to hold reading materials at arm's length in order to focus the words in front of you. Presbyopia can begin anytime after the age of forty, typically; and worsen up to the age of about 60.
The cause of presbyopia is essentially changes in to the lens in the eye. Some experts believe that the lens itself loses elasticity and become more rigid over time. Others believe that the fibers both in and around the lens lose necessary elasticity. Either way, the resulting effect is that the eye has more difficulty focusing on close objects.
For many years, the only treatment available for presbyopes was corrective eye glasses. Eye glasses, while they serve a purpose, do tend to age us and also tend to get in the way of a truly active lifestyle. Fortunately, today there are many forms of treatment ranging from bifocal eye glasses to contact lenses that are virtually undetectable. For those who choose, there is even the option of surgically correcting presbyopia.
Wearing bifocal eye glasses may not be the ideal option, but this is an option nonetheless. Bifocal eye glasses contain two powers; a distance vision prescription at the top of the lens and a prescription for near vision at the lower part of the lens. Most people have seen bifocals at some point or another and know the tell-tale line that sits in the middle of the lens.
If eye glasses are the best option for you, there are progressive eye glasses that provide the two powers of prescription but the progression from one to the other is gradual, eliminating the line found on typical bifocal lenses.
Before leaving the topic of eye glasses for presbyopia, it must be stated that many people in the beginning stages of this eye condition find great relief from simple, non prescription reading glasses.
Contact lenses are a great option when you don't want to let any eye condition age you. Fortunately, many people can throw out their bifocal glasses thanks to the invention of bifocal contact lenses. These contact lenses contain two prescriptive powers, just like bifocal eye glasses. One prescription will correct near vision and the other will correct distance vision. There are also multifocal contact lenses that carry additional variations in power to correct near, intermediate and distance vision at the same time.
Monovision lenses offer yet another option in corrective eyewear. When monovision contact lenses are worn, one eye is fitted with a near vision lens and the other eye will wear a distance vision lens. In this system, the eyes learn to automatically focus properly in each visual situation.
No matter what your age, with advances in technology, you won't be forced to give it away because of the need for vision correction.
